The 2014 Charmail has a well-defined, quite minerally bouquet with blackberry and briary aromas, one of the more precise Haut-Médoc 2014s that I have tasted. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity, fine definition and superb backbone. This is vivacious, focused and delivers great typicité -- all in all a great contribution to the vintage from this estate. Composed of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, the 2015 Dalem spent 18 months in part new and part one-year-old oak barrels. Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, it leaps from the glass with notions of chocolate-covered cherries, crushed blackberries and plum preserves with a cedar and Marmite toast undercurrent plus a touch of beef drippings. Full-bodied and packed to the gills with youthful, crunchy black fruits, it has a firm frame and finishes a little woody at this youthful stage, but it should emerge singing in 2-3 years.Composed of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, the 2015 Dalem spent 18 months in part new and part one-year-old oak barrels. The Doisy Daene 2016 Blanc Sec is one of those wines that just makes you fall head over heels in love with white Bordeaux and makes you wonder why you spent all that money on white Burgundy grand crus. The bouquet is just heavenly with white peach, orange pith and citrus notes that are seamlessly integrated with the oak. The palate is extremely well balanced with a nigh on perfect strand of acidity, shimmering with energy and blessed with a very precise, razor-sharp finish that has just a faint tang of salinity. Just superb. Drink now, leave it, do what you want. • Margaux | Rouge | Cru Bourgeois
Tasted at the Cru Bourgeois annual tasting, the 2015 Deyrem Valentin has an intense bouquet with powerful black cherry and raspberry fruit, a light graphite and marine influence surfacing with time. The palate is medium-bodied with soft tannin, here a mixture of red and black fruit, quite corpulent in the mouth but with a very pure and lightly spiced finish. This is another impressive wine from this estate that deserves a higher profile. Tipping the scales at 15% natural alcohol, its notes of crushed rock, blueberry and raspberry fruit as well as darker currants and forest floor are followed by a deep, medium to full-bodied, rich wine with relatively sweet tannin but lots of extract and a long finish. Drink it over the next 10-15 years. An impressive wine once again from proprietors Jean-Noel and Dominique Herve, this Fronsac is a blend of two-thirds Merlot and the rest mostly Cabernet Franc as well as tiny quantities of Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec.Tipping the scales at 15% natural alcohol, its notes of crushed rock, blueberry and raspberry fruit as well as darker currants and forest floor are followed by a deep, medium to full-bodied, rich wine with relatively sweet tannin but lots of extract and a long finish. The 2014 Chasse-Spleen has an attractive bouquet, one that is more forward than I expected, replete with brambly red berry fruit, pain grillé and brown spice aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine bead of acidity and commendable weight. It perhaps does not quite deliver the freshness and precision I was anticipating after its primeur showing, although I appreciate the tangy marmalade note that complements the black fruit on the structured finish. • Pessac-Léognan | Blanc | Second Vin
The Les Hauts de Smith 2016 Blanc is pure Sauvignon Blanc matured in around 50% new oak. It has a pleasant bouquet with yellow flower aromas complementing the citrus fruit, though it takes a little more encouragement than the Le Petit Haut Lafitte, which has the benefit of the Sémillon. The palate is well balanced with some lovely tropical tones on the entry, dried pineapple, paw paw and then later a touch of lemongrass. I appreciate the way this finishes... with a bit of gusto! I always love this white Pessac-Léognan and this 2016 might be as good as the 2015 last year. The Les Hauts de Smith 2016 Blanc is pure Sauvignon Blanc matured in around 50% new oak. The 2016 La Fleur Peyrabon has a perfumed, floral bouquet not a million miles away from Margaux. I appreciate the definition and freshness here. The palate is medium-bodied, not a powerful Pauillac but very elegant. The tannins here seem very fine and there is wonderful tension towards the finish. The 2014 Reserve de Comtesse de Lalande has a very fresh and vibrant bouquet with lovely cedar-infused black fruit that sings of Pauillac-ness (apologies for the made-up word!). The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, crisp and elegant with a keen line of acidity. The 2014 Haut Marbuzet has retained that ravishing bouquet that it showed out of barrel: plush red cherry and strawberry fruit, a little warmth, almost a cozy bouquet that you could snuggle up in on a warm night. The palate is medium-bodied with plush tannin, good body and density with kirsch, orange rind and Chinese five-spice. It is an atypical Saint Estèphe, but in 2014 this works a treat, a wine you can just revel in and enjoy, with its untrammeled deliciousness. The 2014 Haut Marbuzet has retained that ravishing bouquet that it showed out of barrel: plush red cherry and strawberry fruit, a little warmth, almost a cozy bouquet that you could snuggle up in on a warm night. The 2016 Sociando-Mallet has a refulgent purple/black color. It has a very intense and rich, you might say "ambitious" bouquet with layers of small black cherries, blueberry and a touch of sloes, less tertiary than previous vintages and certainly more opulent. The palate is medium-bodied with juicy ripe tannin that almost disguise the firm structure underneath. I admire the completeness of this Sociando-Mallet, the neatly embroidered new oak and the freshness on the finish. The 2015 Sociando-Mallet did not fire on all cylinders last year, but this 2016 is totally convincing. It comes highly recommended as one of the best wines produced at this estate in the northern Médoc. This is an outstanding wine from Mon. Readers looking for the more ethereal, elegant side of Bordeaux need search no further than Cantemerle, one of the estates in the very southern end of the Medoc. Dense ruby/purple (nearly opaque), this wine offers up notes of lead pencil shavings, spring flowers, raspberries and black cherries. The wine is ethereal, medium-bodied, and by no means a blockbuster, but long and intellectual. However, the tannins are present, and the wine is certainly capable of putting on weight with time in the bottle. Give it 3-4 years of bottle age and drink it over the following 25+ years.Readers looking for the more ethereal, elegant side of Bordeaux need search no further than Cantemerle, one of the estates in the very southern end of the Medoc. The 2016 Barde-Haut is a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, vinified without SO2, matured around 80% in new 300-liter barrels from three cooperages and the remainder in one-year-old barrels. Hélène Garçin-Léveque told me that they are focusing on the elegance of their Saint Emilion estate and are picking a little earlier and practicing slightly less extraction. It has a really quite gorgeous bouquet with layers of ripe black plum and wild strawberry notes tinged with sloes. This has very fine delineation and focus. The palate is very well balanced with super-fine tannin, very well judged acidity and tension that lasts from start to finish. It has a floral note on the nose: small black cherries, blueberry and wilted violets, the last becoming more intense as the initially tight-fisted wine opens in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin. There is very well-judged acidity and its texture is harmonious and silky smooth. The quality is loaded more in the mouth than on the nose at the moment, but it is a seriously classy "deuxième vin" that just needs a little more persistence on the finish. It has a floral note on the nose: small black cherries, blueberry and wilted violets, the last becoming more intense as the initially tight-fisted wine opens in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip on the entry. Graphite-infused red and black fruit on the front palate whilst the back is adorned with just a hint of blue fruit that lends this a more feminine allure. There is lovely balance here, fresh and focused with a touch of graphite borrowed from over the border in Pauillac. Dense purple, with loads of blueberry and blackberry fruit as well as hints of smoke and subtle charred wood, this wine is expansive, round, generous, lush and multi-dimensional. A beautiful example of wine from this estate, which is using well-known consultant Stephane Derenoncourt, finished 2010 at 14.5% natural alcohol, and seems to be one of the sexier, more developed and evolved styles of the vintage.Dense purple, with loads of blueberry and blackberry fruit as well as hints of smoke and subtle charred wood, this wine is expansive, round, generous, lush and multi-dimensional. The 2014 Leoville-Poyferre was surprisingly backward and tight on the nose (usually it is the most expressive and generous Léoville in its youth). The precision and focus is intact, but it is broody and sultry at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with firm structure, which suggests that it has turned volte face since its opulent showing in barrel. Overall, this comes across as perhaps a slightly more austere and masculine wine from Didier Cuvelier, though that is not a criticism, just an observation. I would like to see a little more persistence on the finish, but the tidings bode well for this mercurial and fascinating Léoville-Poyferre. I can see it improving with bottle age, hence the plus sign against my score. The 2014 Leoville-Poyferre was surprisingly backward and tight on the nose (usually it is the most expressive and generous Léoville in its youth). Backward, tannic and beefy, this youthful but formidable 2009 Langoa Barton exhibits a dense ruby/purple color as well as lots of damp earth, underbrush and black currant aromas and flavors, medium to full body, lively acids and, not surprisingly, massive tannins (a characteristic of all the Barton wines). The overall impression is somewhat incongruous, having a certain precociousness in the aromatics, but then clamping down on the taster in the mouth. I recommend waiting 5-7 years before opening a bottle. It should drink well over the following 20-25 years.Backward, tannic and beefy, this youthful but formidable 2009 Langoa Barton exhibits a dense ruby/purple color as well as lots of damp earth, underbrush and black currant aromas and flavors, medium to full body, lively acids and, not surprisingly, massive tannins (a characteristic of all the Barton wines). This wine is more backward than I would have normally expected, but nevertheless, it is very impressive. The 2010 Branaire-Ducru displays an inky bluish purple color and loads of mulberry, raspberry, black currant, graphite and floral notes in its intense aromatics. Medium to full-bodied , with sensational ripeness, purity, texture and length, the tannins are slightly more prominent than I remember from barrel, but they are sweet and ripe (as opposed to astringent and bitter). This beautiful wine needs 4-6 years of cellaring and should keep 25-30 years. This wine is more backward than I would have normally expected, but nevertheless, it is very impressive. Another wine showing better from bottle than it did from barrel, the 2010 Langoa Barton has the typical structured, dense style, but just as I thought earlier on, it is a much softer and more developed wine than one ordinarily expects from proprietor Anthony Barton. It is full-bodied and impressively endowed with subtle oak, rich cassis fruit and notes of new saddle leather, forest floor, cedar wood and spice box. Full, authoritative and dense, this wine should be at its best between 2018 and 2035.Another wine showing better from bottle than it did from barrel, the 2010 Langoa Barton has the typical structured, dense style, but just as I thought earlier on, it is a much softer and more developed wine than one ordinarily expects from proprietor Anthony Barton. • Pauillac | Rouge | Cru Classé
Tasted at the Pontet-Canet vertical in London, the 2011 Château Pontet Canet must constitute one of the best wines on the Left Bank, even if it does not quite live up to its stellar performance from barrel. Lucid purple in color, the bouquet leaps from the glass and yells "Pauillac" - thanks to its graphite seam interwoven through the black fruit. Over ten minutes, tobacco scents join the fray and it develops what you might call "mint fresh" aromatics. The palate is medium-bodied and remains understated on the entry, perhaps exaggerated by the exuberance of the nose. However, there is no question that this is a refined, pure and seamless Pontet-Canet with crème de cassis and cedar inter-layered on the sustained finish. Bon vin. The 2014 Pontet-Canet, now in bottle, was tasted twice during my trip to Bordeaux. It has an attractive bouquet: graphite tinged black fruit, incense and violets, perhaps a little more hedonistic than I envisaged when I tasted it from barrel. The palate is medium-bodied with tensile tannin thanks to the keen line of acidity. I like the precision of this Pontet-Canet. It feels linear and correct, pencil lead notes developing towards the second half, more quintessentially Pauillac than previous vintages, with what you might describe as a classic Pauillac finish that retains the focus that I remarked upon from barrel. The 2016 Beychevelle is comprised of 47% Cabernet Sauvignon, 47% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc. It spent 18 months aging in 50% new and 50% second-use barrels. Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, it is a little broody to begin, opening slowly to reveal subtle savory notes of dried herbs, charcuterie and black olives before breaking through to a profound core of warm cassis, baked black plums, red currant jelly and candied violets. The palate is medium-bodied and delicately played with a quiet intensity of tightly wound nuances and fantastic freshness, finishing with a lingering savory lift. • Margaux | Rouge | Cru Classé
The wine hits all cylinders in 2010. The average alcohol for the bottled wine is 14%. It has a gorgeously sweet nose of creme de cassis, spring flowers, subtle barbecue smoke and charcoal followed by full body, beautiful intensity, great purity, stature and length. The influence of any oak is minimal, despite the fact that 90% new French oak was used. Needless to say, this is an example of modern-styled winemaking at it’s finest, and arguments that such wines will not age well, do not represent their terroir , and are soul-less, are totally groundless. Give it 5 or so years of cellaring and drink it over the following 25-30 years. This is one of the great Margaux wines of the vintage. Probably the greatest Lascombes made to date, the 2010 is a blend of 55% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Petit Verdot. The production from this huge estate totals nearly 400,000 bottles. The wine hits all cylinders in 2010. The average alcohol for the bottled wine is 14%. The 2014 Le Petit Cheval Blanc, the first release to be commercialized, has a crisp and well-defined bouquet with scents of linden, yellow flowers and citrus fruit. Certainly there are no pyrazine elements here that Pierre-Olivier Clouet told me that he wanted to avoid. The palate is taut and linear, the acidity noticeable, conveying a light marine influence towards the finish with lip-smacking salinity on the aftertaste. It is a neutral style of Bordeaux Blanc that deftly disguises the oak. It is an impressive wine, though I wager that it will be even more so once the Sémillon comes on board in 2018.The 2014 Le Petit Cheval Blanc, the first release to be commercialized, has a crisp and well-defined bouquet with scents of linden, yellow flowers and citrus fruit. The 2014 Mouton-Rothschild was closed at first when I tasted the wine in bottle with winemaker Philippe Dhalluin. But as it transpires, this First Growth is just toying with you. Initially quite understated, it responds to aeration like a young child peeking from around a corner and then running out, waving its hands. It suddenly hits you with gorgeous black cherries, bilberry, cedar and wilted rose petal. The palate is medium-bodied with a silky smooth entry. This is utterly seductive: a wine without a hair out of place. It is not as powerful or as complex as the 2015 Mouton-Rothschild, yet the precision and focus here is beguiling. It will require five to seven years to absorb the 100% new oak, then it will be an utterly delicious and to use a term employed at en primeur, "cerebral" First Growth that is destined to give two or three decades of pleasure. Tasted blind at the 2012 Southwold tasting, the 2012 Cheval Blanc has a perfumed, outgoing, almost "glossy" bouquet that wants to be noticed, lavished with damson, wild strawberry, fig jam and crème de cassis scents that are totally seductive. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe, succulent, sensual red cherries and wild strawberry fruit, though perhaps the finish showed some superfluous hubris that just erased some of the potential delineation and focus. On this occasion it was pipped to the post by Ausone, but let us see how it matures, because the white horse always repays those that are patient. The 2015 Mouton Rothschild is a blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc aged in 100% new oak with a mid-July 2017 bottling. Deep garnet-purple colored, this Mouton pulls off an incredibly impactful entrance, emerging from the glass with profound notes of blackberry preserves, plum pudding, crème de cassis and grilled meats, featuring perfectly accessorized accents of sandalwood, cinnamon stick and fenugreek with wafts of dried roses, unsmoked cigars and tilled soil. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is completely packed with rich, ripe black fruits sparked with blue and red fruit undertones and an incredible structure of very firm, very ripe tannins, with seamless freshness and an epically long, earth-laced finish. Possessing striking natural beauty framed by impeccable crafting, this 2015 is a total diva and well worth attention. Give it a good 7-8 years in bottle, at least, and drink it over the next 30+ years.
